The first trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 has dropped, but one major character seems to have virtually disappeared: Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). Despite being at the heart of the story since the beginning, Will’s screen time in the new trailer is limited, especially in action scenes. He was only seen in the first half of the trailer. Is his role being sidelined as the show races toward its final episodes?

That may not be possible after such a big power reveal of Will at the end of Part 1. Co-creator Ross Duffer previously teased that Will’s connection to the Upside Down would play a pivotal role in ending Vecna’s reign of terror. Ross Duffer said (via Tudum),

‘What if Will were able to harness this connection and use it against our villains?’ We also felt it very natural to re-center the story on Will. He was the kid who was taken in Season 1, so it felt right for the story to come full circle. If anyone [was] going to be the key to ending Vecna, it needed to be Will.

In Volume 1’s ending, we saw him tap into new powers to control the Demogorgons and assist his friends in their battle against Vecna. However, his minimal presence in the trailer has many fans concerned.

Gaten Matarazzo Said Will Will “Change the Game” in Stranger Things Season 5

Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, offered some insight into the character’s evolving role in the final season. Matarazzo teased that Will’s newfound powers will “change the game” for the Hawkins kids. He said (via Tudum),

I think that puts us on more of an even playing field. I’m sure that’s objectively terrifying to Vecna.

As Will taps into his connection with the Upside Down, it’s clear that his powers will be critical in taking down Vecna. But the trailer doesn’t give much away about how he’ll wield them.

In the trailer, Will expresses doubts, telling Joyce (Winona Ryder), “We failed,” to which she reassures him, “It’s not over. Not by a long shot.” Still, the lack of focus on Will’s character in the trailer has fans wondering if he will be sidelined or if his role will be redefined in these final episodes. However, one way or another, it’s better for us not to get any spoilers.

The Volume 2 trailer reveals plenty of action-packed moments as the Hawkins crew prepares for their showdown with Vecna. One of the scenes shows Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) reuniting. The two reaffirm their brotherly bond with a life-or-death pact. Steve says, “If you die, I die,” and Dustin repeats the same. These two have been a fan favorite duo that started in season 2, and the final season will not be any exception.

In Season 5 Part 1 ending, we saw Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) reuniting with her long-lost sister, Kali (Linnea Berthelsen). The trailer shows they are strategizing against Vecna. Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) also steps up, emerging from Murray’s truck with a sniper rifle. The badass Nancy is ready to take on the federal agents and whatever dangers lie ahead.

The trailer also hints that the Upside Down appears to be a bit different. Dustin explains that everything they have assumed about Upside Down is totally wrong. The trailer ends with Vecna repeating, “It is time,” followed by a red cloud thunder spreading across the sky.
