Health officials confirm three new measles cases in Colorado

  • December 16, 2025

WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – On Monday, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) confirmed three new measles cases, one in Weld County and two in Montezuma County.

Health officials said an unvaccinated school-aged child in Weld County began showing symptoms after traveling to a part of another state where a measles outbreak is ongoing. At this time, officials say there are no public exposure locations associated with the case.

According to health officials, two additional cases have been confirmed in Montezuma County residents. CDPHE said both residents are unvaccinated household contacts of a previously confirmed case.

CDPHE said both Montezuma County residents have been quarantining during their infectious period, and there are no known public exposure locations.

“With the holiday season in full swing, getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and your community from measles,” Dr. Rachel Herlihy, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and State Epidemiologist said. “Holiday gatherings often involve close contact indoors and travel to see family and friends, creating an environment where measles can spread easily. Ensuring you are up to date on the MMR vaccine is critical to protecting vulnerable loved ones you may visit, including infants too young to be vaccinated and family members with weakened immune systems.”

Health officials said symptoms of measles can include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that starts on the face and spreads.

Symptoms typically begin to develop seven to 21 days after exposure. If you believe you may have developed symptoms, contact your health care provider, an urgent care center or an emergency department.
