Elon Musk’s fortune has climbed past $600 billion for the first time, setting a new record after a surge in the value of his privately held space company, SpaceX.

Musk is now worth about $638 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The increase follows a recent insider share sale that valued SpaceX at roughly $800 billion, making it the world’s most valuable private company.

The calculation marks the first time Bloomberg’s wealth index has placed an individual’s net worth above $600 billion. Musk, 54, has steadily pulled further ahead of other billionaires as SpaceX becomes a larger driver of his wealth.

SpaceX valuation drives record wealth

Musk founded SpaceX and serves as its chief executive officer. The company is based in Starbase, Texas, and has grown into a cornerstone of his financial holdings. Investors say the latest valuation reflects confidence in SpaceX’s long-term prospects, from commercial rocket launches to satellite-based internet services.

The transaction that set the new valuation was not a public offering. Instead, it was a secondary share sale that allowed employees and early investors to sell shares at the updated price. Such sales often establish new benchmarks for private companies without exposing them to public markets.

Musk’s stake and liquidity limits

Musk owns about 42% of SpaceX. After applying a liquidity discount used for private firms, that stake is valued at roughly $317 billion. Because SpaceX shares are not publicly traded, much of Musk’s wealth remains tied to company equity rather than cash.

Despite those limits, the latest calculation pushes Musk into uncharted territory. It is the highest net worth ever recorded by Bloomberg’s index.

A rapid rise in billionaire rankings

Musk first crossed the $100 billion mark in 2020, driven largely by gains in Tesla Inc., where he is also chief executive officer. When Bloomberg added him to its wealth index in 2013, his net worth was estimated at $4.8 billion.

The scale of the increase highlights how quickly wealth can accumulate when private and public technology companies surge in value.

SpaceX’s growing reach in space and connectivity

SpaceX has become the dominant force in the orbital launch industry. Its Falcon 9 rockets regularly carry satellites, cargo, and astronauts into orbit for government and commercial customers.

The company also operates Starlink, a fast-growing satellite network that provides broadband internet access in remote and underserved regions around the world.

In July, an earlier secondary share sale valued SpaceX at about $400 billion. The sharp rise since then reflects strong investor demand and confidence in the company’s expanding operations.

IPO speculation and future growth

Musk’s fortune could rise further if SpaceX moves ahead with a long-discussed initial public offering. The company has been linked to a potential valuation of about $1.5 trillion if it lists as early as next year.

Elon Musk just confirmed the most INSANE IPO in history.

SpaceX is going public in 2026.

$1.5 TRILLION valuation. Raising $30+ billion.

That’s the biggest IPO ever made. Beating Saudi Aramco’s $29 billion record from 2019.

At that level, Musk’s stake would be worth more than $625 billion, placing him within reach of becoming the world’s first trillionaire, at least on paper. Any IPO would depend on market conditions and regulatory approvals.

More recently, Musk has pointed to new ambitions, including plans for space-based artificial intelligence data centers. While still in early stages, the idea signals SpaceX’s push beyond launches and internet services.

For now, the latest valuation cements Musk’s position as the wealthiest individual ever tracked by modern financial rankings, driven by the soaring value of a private space company that has yet to go public.
