Auckland FC extend remarkable A-League away record with Wanderers win

  • December 21, 2025

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Steve Corica after Friday’s match. “It’s a challenge for us with all the travel but we had a very good season last year away from home and we are continuing this season the way we left off last season. We want to win every possible game – home or away.”

Corica was pleased with the turnaround against the Wanderers on Friday, after a difficult first half. The home side dominated proceedings, with Corica admitting they were allowed too much time and space on the ball, but couldn’t make it count. Auckland FC defended stoutly, while Bozhidar Kraev was unlucky to hit the post with a well-struck attempt.

Everything flipped after halftime, with strong impact off the bench, particularly Guillermo May and Felipe Gallegos, and more energy overall.

“Our depth in the squad is really good, we have everyone fit at the moment,” said Corica.

Sam Cosgrove’s goal put Auckland ahead in the 57th minute after some neat passing and Lachlan Brook doubled their advantage in the 74th minute with a bullet shot. Though the Wanderers pushed hard, Auckland had the best opportunities for further goals, with good chances falling to May and Brook. Belgian midfielder Louis Verstraete was influential, particularly in the second half, as he created the opportunity for Brook’s strike and was everywhere he needed to be.

“He worked his socks off,” agreed Corica, who judged him man of the match.

Auckland FC next face Sydney FC on December 27 in what will be a top of the table clash.
