Two major films released on Christmas Day yesterday – the Hindi romcom Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, and the Hollywood biggie, Anaconda. Both films are as different as chalk and cheese. However, besides their release dates, they oddly meet at the same pop-culture pit stop: a F.R.I.E.N.D.S-inspired “relief” moment.
Christmas releases Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, Anaconda have one more similarity besides the release date – the F.R.I.E.N.D.S and ‘pee’ connection
In a scene in Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, which was also shown in the teaser, Rumi (Ananya Panday) gets stung by a jellyfish. Rumi cries in pain and Rehaan aka Ray (Kartik Aaryan) asks her to manage until they go back to the yacht and seek medical help. But Rumi is in deep pain and wants immediate relief. This is when Ray reminds her of an episode of the cult TV show F.R.I.E.N.D.S, where Chandler pees on Monica, after the latter is similarly in pain due to the jellyfish sting. Rumi is disgusted at first but the pain is so unbearable that she agrees with Ray’s idea.
Coincidentally, Anaconda also has a scene of this nature. Doug (Jack Black) is bitten by a giant spider on his leg in the Amazon Rainforest. His pals suggest that someone should pee on the affected area. Claire (Thandiwe Newton) even questions if it’s only meant for jellyfish stings, neatly underlining the F.R.I.E.N.D.S connection, before Griff (Paul Rudd) insists it applies here too. Griff refuses to do the honours, leaving Kenny (Steve Zahn), who claims he hasn’t peed in public in 30 years, to step up, triggering a wave of laughter.
As a result, while Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri and Anaconda belong to different worlds, they end up sharing the same comic beat, proof that when it comes to pop-culture “relief” (pun intended), even cinema speaks one universal language.
