Four people are injured, two critically and two moderately, after a crash on the south side of State Highway 1 across the Brynderwyns this afternoon.
Police said the two-vehicle crash was reported around 12.45pm today.
“Initial indications are that multiple people are injured, some seriously,” a police spokesperson said.
“Motorists should expect delays while emergency services work at the scene.”
Hato Hone St John told 1News it responded with two helicopters, two ambulances, one rapid response unit and two operations managers.
It said three patients, two of which were in critical condition and one in moderate condition, were being airlifted to Auckland City Hospital.
An additional patient, also in moderate condition, was being transported by road to Auckland City Hospital.
Southbound traffic was diverted through Waipu while northbound traffic was diverted down SH12 towards Dargaville.
A 1News reporter on the scene earlier today said southbound traffic was backed up more than 5km.
The serious crash unit had been notified.
