People who have not yet been vaccinated are being urged to boost their protection this winter with flu and Covid-19 vaccines.

If you are eligible for winter vaccines, you can get the free flu or Covid-19 vaccine at a pharmacy. Appointments can be booked online, via the NHS App or by calling 119 for free.

School-aged children who missed the vaccine offer in school can get their flu vaccine at a catch-up community clinic. Find more details at Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Top up your protection

Dr Kate Langford, chief medical and outcomes officer at NHS Kent and Medway, said: “We are seeing a significant rise in flu this winter and need your help. If you are eligible, make sure you get your winter vaccines. Take simple precautions to avoid getting ill and if you are feeling under the weather, contact NHS 111 or a local pharmacy.

“It is important to top up your protection, even if you have had a vaccine or been ill with flu or Covid-19 before, as immunity fades over time and these viruses change each year.

“Make sure you get your RSV vaccine if you are eligible. The vaccine helps protect against a common virus that can make babies and older adults seriously ill.”

Relieve pressure from our health services

Professor David Whiting, Medway Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “As well as protecting yourself and your loved ones, keeping up-to-date with your vaccinations can help relieve pressure from our health services in what is always the busiest time of year.

“All of us can play our part to help relieve that pressure too. Everyday things like making sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using tissues when coughing or sneezing or making sure to stay at home if you feel unwell. Simple steps like this can help to stop the spread of germs and illness in our families and communities this winter.”

Best defence

Kent County Council’s Director of Public Health, Dr Anjan Ghosh, said: “Vaccination remains our best defence against viruses like flu so if you are eligible for a free vaccine this winter please take up the offer.

“You can also reduce the risk of spreading flu by staying away from others if you feel unwell, particularly someone who is frail, has a long term health condition or is recovering from an operation.

“If you have to go out, wearing a face covering can also help protect those around you. If you are visiting vulnerable family or friends in a care home or hospital, please follow their rules for safe visits.”
