Auditions for the 2026 National Youth Pipe Band of New Zealand are now open, following a busy first year under a refreshed programme led by Youth Band Director Stuart Easton.

Stuart said: “This is the chance for our players to join other up-and-coming Kiwi pipers and drummers in a programme which will upskill, challenge, and provide you opportunities to perform right around New Zealand and the world.”

The current programme has 26 players, with an age limit of 23. Applications close on Sunday, February 8, with successful applicants being informed shortly thereafter. Players who are interested in applying can find the application form here.

“We’ve got an ambitious programme ahead of us,” Stuart added.

“The reset allowed us to re-focus and give band members not just bagpipe and drum fundamentals, but wider musical opportunities. 2026 is shaping up to build on that with a programme targeted at continuing to build momentum and refining individual skills – as well as solidifying lifelong friendships and experiences.

“As well as domestic performances, concerts and outreach activities, we always look for international opportunities to stretch the band. We’re working on a few ideas which we hope will expand our player’s abilities and showcase their talents to the world.”

Stuart also said the Youth Band had finished recording its first album, with a release date expected in the next couple of months.

“We are really excited to showcase the best of young Kiwi talent. From traditional marches, dances and piobaireachd right through to contemporary tracks, the album – which will be available on Spotify for free – is a snapshot in time of young New Zealand pipers and drummers doing what they love.”

The National Youth Pipe Band of New Zealand is under the direction of Director Stuart Easton, Head of Drumming Scott Birrell and Bass & Tenor tutor Jack Spencer.
