THE ultimate dream for the new Mustang Cup Australia series would be to put a homegrown driver on the path to a Le Mans gig with Ford.

That’s the vision shared by category promoter James Stewart of Driving Solutions as the countdown to Round 1 at Phillip Island in March closes in.

“I think the biggest thing is the program to get young drivers to the next step,” said Stewart.

“Whether it’s with the Ford family going from Mustang Cup to GT4 to GT3 or even into Supercars, I just think it’s a great program that Ford can actually provide for young drivers.

“It would be great to see a young Australian come out of Mustang Cup and join the Ford Hypercar program and be on the grid at Le Mans.

“Long term, that would be the greatest outcome that we could get.”

It was last January that Ford announced its all-new Hypercar project to debut for 2027.

Back to Mustang Cup Australia, among the drivers confirmed so far are Imogen Radburn, Matt Kiss and Keith Kassulke.

“This car is great and so accessible to all people. Number one, it’s a cult brand: the Mustang is iconic. It sounds cool and who doesn’t want to actually have a proper V8?” said Stewart.
