In a fresh round of litigation over the Kapur family fortune, Rani Kapur, mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has moved Delhi High Court seeking cancellation of the Rani Kapur Family Trust, which holds a substantial stake in listed auto component manufacturer Sona Comstar.

The suit added a fresh layer to an already pending dispute before the high court over control and succession of Sunjay Kapur’s assets. While the precise valuation of the trust is not disclosed in court filings, it is estimated to run into several thousand crores, given its holding in the listed Sona Group entity.

In her plea, 80-year-old Rani Kapur has alleged that the trust was fraudulently created to strip her of her entire estate, including effective control over the Sona Group of companies. She has accused Priya Kapur, Sunjay Kapur’s widow, of being the central figure behind what she describes as a carefully executed conspiracy.

According to the suit, Priya Kapur acted with haste after Sunjay Kapur’s death to take control of key Sona Group companies, without informing or consulting her. Rani Kapur has claimed that these steps were taken behind her back, despite her being the matriarch of the family and the original owner of the assets in question.

The plaint further said that following a stroke suffered by Rani Kapur in 2017, her late son and Priya Kapur exploited her physical vulnerability and dependence. It alleges that the two used her trust to engineer a series of transactions through which all her assets were transferred into the RK Family Trust, without her informed consent or understanding of the consequences.

Rani Kapur has claimed that she was repeatedly asked to sign documents, including blank papers, on the assurance that these were routine or administrative in nature. She has contended that she was never informed that these signatures would result in the complete divestment of her personal and business assets.

The suit alleged that a “complex web of illegal transactions” was carried out by Priya Kapur and other defendants, in collusion with Sunjay Kapur, leading to the vesting of all her assets in what she has described as a fraudulent trust. It further claims that the alleged fraud came to light only after Sunjay Kapur’s death on June 12, 2025, and the sequence of events that followed immediately thereafter.

Rani Kapur has arrayed 23 entities as defendants in the case. Besides Priya Kapur, the list includes seven of her grandchildren, among them two children of actor Karisma Kapoor.
