Kate Middleton isn’t afraid to break a little protocol now and again, from driving herself to an appearance in 4-inch stilettos to, as she did this week, running ahead of her security detail to greet a well-wisher.
On January 20, the Princess of Wales and her husband Prince William visited Scotland, their second joint appearance of 2026. In a sweet moment from the visit Tuesday, the future queen went “off script” (to quote The Daily Mail) and dashed—in heeled Gianvito Rossi boots, no less—towards a fan who had flowers to give her.

Kate is the Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland, and she and William were a hit with crowds that came to greet them during their busy day of learning about Scottish heritage traditions. For the occasion, Kate wore a bespoke Chris Kerr blue tartan coat that she helped design atop a black turtleneck from Zara. She accessorized with not just her sapphire and diamond engagement ring but also a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings given to her as a present from William ahead of their royal wedding on April 29, 2011.

William and Kate were leaving Radical Weavers, a tartan-weaving studio, when the Princess of Wales “dashed past members of her security team after she noticed a fan in the crowd looking disappointed to see them go without accepting her flowers,” The Daily Mail reported. “The woman’s face lit up as Kate ran towards her, thanked her for the bouquet, and posed for a selfie in an authentic interaction that left social media users delighted.”
After receiving her bouquet of flowers—reportedly red carnations—Kate said (per Hello!), “I appreciate it, thank you. Bye bye, everyone!”

Running in heels, breaking protocol, beating her husband in a head-to-head curling match all while wearing a skirt on the ice, designing her own coat—all in a day’s work for this future queen. This isn’t the only time Kate has broken protocol to stop to talk to a fan, either. One year ago, in January 2025, she stopped an entire royal convoy to meet a 3-year-old little girl as she was leaving a knitwear factory in Wales.

In what was reported as a “highly unusual move,” Kate stopped the motorcade and hopped out of her car to greet the little girl, who had been sweetly calling out, “Hello, princess!” according to the BBC. Members of the crowd cheered as the Princess of Wales ran towards her, telling her, “I heard you calling.”
