A lighthearted slip-up by Martin Short has now become one of the most talked-about moments from Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding celebrations. The actor-comedian recently revealed that he accidentally cut into the couple’s wedding cake during their reception, thanks to a simple misunderstanding that unfolded late into the evening.

The wedding in Santa Barbara in September 2025 was an intimate and elegant gathering of close friends from the entertainment industry. On a late-night talk show, Martin Short reminisced about the event; he said it was beautifully organised and joyful, and then he admitted that a tiny moment of confusion caused a little accident.
Martin Short said the reception was held under a big tent where there was an area for dancing, live music, and several zones for guest seating. At the back, there were lounge-style areas for a chat and a break. It was at one of those seats that he noticed a wedding cake nearby. He assumed that the couple had arranged several cakes for different groups of guests, so he did not think twice about it.
As the evening progressed and the cake was still there, Short thought that Steve Martin, who was about to leave, would like a piece. He believed the cake was for the guests in that part of the room, so he took a knife and started to cut it. After a moment, other guests protested and informed him that he had gotten the wrong cake, the main wedding cake. When he realised his mistake, Short attempted to fix the situation by making the best of the cut, even though it was too late to undo the damage.
He later quipped that Steve Martin looked so surprised that he thought he had seen a ghost, whereas the moment had left him wondering if it was time for him to quietly sneak out of the reception. In fact, he even laughed about the incident with Paul Rudd later that night.
Luckily, the wedding team was able to sort out the problem immediately. Short remembered the chef as the one who took over, repaired the cake, and thus, saved the moment before it could have turned into a real catastrophe. Chuckling at the incident, Short said the cake actually got more character and added in jest that it had become a real Hollywood wedding cake.
