Police said cordons were in place on Onehunga Mall between Arthur and Church Sts following a building fire this evening.
“Police were called to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand just after 8pm,” a spokesperson said.
“The fire is producing significant smoke – those in the area are advised to stay inside and close windows and doors.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.”
A witness told the Herald the blaze was large, but the firefighters were doing a great job.
He said the fire spread to the second floor of the house, which he believed took place in an empty shop.
