After keeping fans waitig for almost two long years, Ok Taecyeon and Hayato Isomura announced on Wednesday that their drama ‘Soul Mate’, will release this summer. The highly anticipated drama brings together the Korean singer with the Japanese hunk in an intimate drama, tiptoeing the lines of friendship, love, loneliness and healing within an LGBTQ+ narrative.
About the limited series ‘Soul Mate’
The announcement posted on the Netflix official X account, along with a first-look image of the two leading stars. As per reports, the series follows a Korean boxer and a troubled young man whose chance encounter leads to a bond that transforms both their lives. This new-found firendship helps them “heal each other’s pain and loneliness.”

While Hayato portrays Ryu Narutaki, a Japanese native who is saved by Johan Hwang, played by Taecyeon. The series traces their friendship which unfolds over a decade, taking the characters across Berlin, Seoul and Tokyo.

Director and writer Shunki Hashizume also confirmed the update on social media, sharing the news on his Instagram Stories with the message, “Sorry for the wait.”
‘Soul Mate’ relase date
First announced in June 2024, the project was initially expected to be released in 2025. However, production adjustments and scheduling changes led to a delay before the 14 May 2026 premiere being finalised.
‘Soul Mate’ plot details
The ‘Soul Mate’ official synopsis reads, “After unintentionally destroying the life of his best friend, Ryu leaves everything behind in Japan and flees to Berlin. There, he nearly dies in a tragic church fire, but is rescued by a Korean boxer named JoHan.Haunted by pain, the two young men grow closer and eventually fall in love, bound by a connection neither of them can explain. However, as they become more deeply involved, their bond is tested by time, distance, fate, and inevitable anguish—revealing the quiet power of two wounded souls who find comfort in one another.”
Ok Taecyeon and Hayato Isomura on ‘Soul Mate’ roles
Hayato, known for his role in ‘Alice in Borderland’, previously said the drama’s script “moved me with its story of love amidst sadness and pain.”Taecyeon, began his career as a member of the K-pop boy band 2PM, before moving on to star in K-Drama, his latest being ‘Heartbeat’ meanwhile, said he found his character intriguing. Reacting to his character in the script, he said, “His inner struggles and pain stayed with me long after I read the script.” he said.
