Harry Potter and his magical universe continue as HBO is creating a TV series with a younger cast, and bringing another adaptation of the best-selling fantasy novel series.

Production has been underway for HBO’s magical remake since July 2025, and the cast of Harry Potter have been shooting the series in England. The first season will have eight episodes, and the plan is for seven seasons to focus on each book in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series.

HBO’s Chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, spoke with Deadline and confirmed that the series will be released in 2027. Bloys first addressed a potential release date in 2024 and stated it could be late 2026 to 2027, but added that “writers are just getting started, so it’s too soon to talk about airdate.”

“We’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027.”

The new adaptation has already found its cast with John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Warwick Davis as Professor Filius Flitwick, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The three main characters, Harry, Hermione, and Ron, are relatively unknown young stars, and this new series will propel them into the spotlight much like it did for the original three in the iconic Harry Potter movie franchise.

It’s still unknown how faithful they will be to the original source material, but Davis, who is reprising his role for the reboot, stated that the episodes are “very faithful adaptations.” “I’m working on it at the moment, but I can’t really tell you anything other than we’re retelling those wonderful stories but with more depth and detail than has been seen before,” Davis told Times Radio.

HBO’s Harry Potter reboot series should be released in 2027.
