The gaming industry is buzzing with excitement, as new rumors have emerged about Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6developments. For years, fans have speculated about whether PlayStation would return to the handheld market after the PlayStation Vita. New details from major hardware leaker KeplerL2 reveal that the Japanese giant is preparing to make a substantial change in its business operations. The leaks describe two different methods, which include updating existing technology and developing a high-performance handheld device for future use.

Breaking down the next-gen PlayStation 6 hardware

KeplerL2 claims that Sony is preparing an OLED version of their current cloud streaming device, PlayStation Portal, for release later this year. The original Portal was an unexpected success, so an OLED variant would be an improvement. After all, you will get to enjoy your PS5 games on a handheld with better colors and remote play capabilities.

The highlight of the latest PlayStation 6 leak is that a rumored native PS6 handheld is. This device is expected to operate without cloud streaming, which would set it apart from the current Portal. Moreover, this rumored handheld is expected to have 16 cus (Compute Units), which use the RDNA5 architecture, which is expected to be released after the RTX 60 series in 2027, and operate with LPDDR5X-9600 RAM. If the rumors are to be believed, this system would be capable of running next-generation games through native support that generates a hybrid gaming system that operates at lower resolutions similar to Switch and Steam Deck.

KeplerL2 also confirmed the graphical capabilities of the upcoming PlayStation 6 console, which Moore’s Law Is Dead previously reported a few months ago. The standard PS6 is leaked to have 52 CUs. Moreover, this latest PlayStation leak also hinted at the Xbox’s rumored next-gen console, codenamed Magnus, to have 68 CUs.

According to these leaks, Microsoft might be chasing more raw power for its upcoming console, but Sony is pivoting more towards creating a hybrid ecosystem. So, you can enjoy next-gen PlayStation titles seamlessly on a home console or a native. Sony has yet to confirm these leaks, so I suggest taking these rumors with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, Sony’s plans seem interesting and suggest they plan to leave their mark on the handheld market once again since the PS Vita.
