If the last few days weren’t bad enough – MetService has forecast another warm and muggy evening for much of the North Island tonight.
Meteorologist Michael Pawley said there was a “soupy mess of humid air”, which has blanketed most areas.
Napier, which was expected to reach a high of 32C during the daytime, will drop only to 23C overnight.
Auckland meanwhile is expected to have a low of 21C overnight.
Heat alerts have been placed on both Napier and Hastings today, which are both expected to reach highs of 32C and 33C respectively.
Previously, Massey University sleep scientist Leigh Signal said the optimal bedroom temperature is between 17C and 19C – which is difficult to achieve in nights like these.
However, she has also suggested some sleep tips during warm evenings, such as ditching synthetic bedding materials, trying to relax if woken up by the heat during the night, and to partake in a relaxing activity if struggling to fall asleep again after 30 minutes.
Those in the South Island may not require these tips however, as MetService said there is a possibility of snow above 1200 metres about Canterbury from Tuesday afternoon.

Tomorrow, the maximum temperature for Canterbury will be in the early hours of the morning, and Christchurch will drop to a chilly 12°C for most of the day.
A heavy rain watch is also in place about the Westland ranges south of Fox Glacier until this evening.
Tomorrow, a heavy rain watch is in place for Marlborough south of Seddon, and Canterbury north of the Rangitata River, which has a high chance of being upgraded to an orange rain warning.
There is also strong wind watch for southeasterlies about Fiordland, Westland and Grey District.
The long weekend
Metservice said holiday makers and festival goers will be happy with the weather forecast for the second half of this week – as it will be more settled as high pressure moves over Aoteaora.
Thursday will bring sunshine in time for the Laneway Festival at Auckland’s Western Springs, and Waitangi Day on Friday will have fine spells in the North Island, particularly in eastern areas.
Most onshore winds will drag in a bit of cloud from the west on Friday.
Meanwhile, in the South Island, a band of rain will move up from Westland. Eastern parts of the South Island are expected to have more sunny spells, particularly in Nelson and Marlborough.
A few showers will spill over from the Southern Alps further south.
