Last August we wrote about Genie 3, a new ‘general purpose world model’ from Google using AI to create virtual worlds from text prompts.

Now ‘Project Genie’ is rolling out for people to actually play with, albeit only if they’re subscribed to Google AI Ultra in the US, which costs $249.99 a month.

“This experimental research prototype lets users create, explore and remix their own interactive worlds,” explained Google in a blog post outlining how Project Genie works and what can be done with it.

It is early days for this technology, but it is already having a ripple effect. Reuters reported that the share prices of games firms including Take-Two Interactive, Roblox and Unity all dropped sharply following the announcement of Project Genie.

We’re following this area with interest, though. If and when this kind of GenAI tool becomes available more widely, what could artists and their teams build with it? Or, indeed, their fans?
