Three boys have been stood down from an Oamaru high school hostel while police investigate serious bullying.
St Kevin’s College said it was supporting the victim’s family.
In a statement, principal Jo Walshe said the incident was reported immediately and the school acted swiftly.
“College leadership provided immediate and ongoing support to the victim’s family, assisting them in reporting the matter to the police,” Walshe said.
“As this is now under active police investigation, neither the hostel nor the college staff can provide further comment. Our priority remains the safety and wellbeing of our students and fully co-operating with the authorities.”
Walshe declined to confirm what occurred but said the incident was not waterboarding, despite some media reports.
Police said it happened last month and officers were investigating.
The Ministry of Education confirmed it was also aware of the matter.
“The school is following its procedures and ensuring appropriate support for students,” it said.
