The decision is expected to be delivered in court today.

A Laois nursing home which has been cited for repeatedly exposing its residents to significant harm is to lose its license.

In a letter to staff seen by Midlands 103, Droimnin Nursing Home’s owners say they’re expecting their registration to be cancelled today with the HSE set to take over.

The Stradbally facility, which is currently home to 40 residents, has been the subject of a HIQA application to cancel its license since September of last year after its chief inspector found there was “reasonable grounds of risks to life or serious risk to the health and welfare of its residents”.

Over the last year an investigation was launched by the the HSA and HIQA after the unexpected death of a woman in her 80s in March, while an inspection report published over the summer said resident felt their rights were not always upheld.

A judge had asked both HIQA and Droimnin Nursing Home Limited to resolve outstanding issues through mediation in September.

However in its latest report, the healthcare watchdog failed the home in eight out of nine regulation areas.

The operater has been telling its staff, residents, and their families its key objective is for the facility to continue to operate without any disruption of service.

The HSE will take over on an interim basis with a decision on the long term operation of the facility to be taken at a later date.
