Avengers: Secret Wars will seemingly see the return of a Marvel Cinematic Universe hero who was rumored to die in the franchise’s next team movie, according to Mark Ruffalo. Production will begin on the final Avengers movie of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga in the coming months, following a reported period of reshoots to finish Avengers: Doomsday‘s story and include more actors.
So far, little to no updates have been shared about Avengers: Secret Wars’ cast and plot. Some characters, like the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, and unnamed New Avengers members, are confirmed for the film. However, we are likely still far away from a full cast list like Marvel has revealed for Avengers: Doomsday. As such, a hero’s return for the 2027 movie is making waves online.
Speaking to BuzzFeed UK, MCU Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo seemingly revealed that Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor in Avengers: Secret Wars.
The reveal happened during a game where the actors and Fox X-Men star Halle Berry had to say who appeared in more superhero projects. As Hemsworth counted his Avengers appearances, Ruffalo said, “Six… well, there will be,” to which the Thor actor replied with, “Yeah, but we have not shot that one.” With Avengers: Doomsday principal photography finished, Hemsworth has shot five Avengers films, so Secret Wars would be the sixth.

The reveal is interesting for a couple of factors. For starters, Ruffalo’s own situation when it comes to the MCU’s upcoming Avengers movies is up in the air. The actor was not part of the revealed stars during the Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal live-stream, nor did he appear in one of the four Avengers: Doomsday teasers released in theaters so far.
Likewise, Ruffalo’s Hulk has yet to be confirmed for Avengers: Secret Wars. Bruce Banner’s next appearance in the MCU comes in 2026, with the character playing a role in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. How that connects to one or both of the upcoming Avengers movies has yet to be seen. However, Ruffalo seems to have knowledge of the productions.
As for Hemsworth, the Thor actor was the first name revealed at the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement. Thor was also the star of the second Avengers: Doomsday teaser, which saw the God of Thunder pray to his father, Odin, for protection as he went to battle a frightening new enemy, presumably Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Due to the bleak nature of the teaser, with Thor asking for help to survive the fight and come home to his adoptive daughter, Love, rumors about the God of Thunder dying in Avengers: Doomsday began to gain strength. However, with Ruffalo claiming that Hemsworth will be back in Avengers: Secret Wars, that teases that the Marvel hero will survive the 2026 movie.
