The woman who became the public voice of Big Bear’s internationally followed bald eagle nest has died, according to the nonprofit that operates the live cam.
Friends of Big Bear Valley announced late Wednesday that executive director Sandy Steers “passed away on the evening of 2/11/2026.”
“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness to let our Friends of Big Bear Valley eagle family know,” the organization wrote. “We will be providing more information in the future, but please give our team time to grieve and process this sad news.”
No cause of death was immediately released.

Steers was a central figure in the Big Bear eagle cam community, regularly providing updates about bald eagles Jackie and Shadow and their chicks to viewers around the world.
She spoke with KTLA multiple times during major moments at the nest — including last spring when eaglet Sunny attempted his first flight.
“Sunny looked afraid,” Steers said at the time, describing how the young eagle briefly lifted off before letting the wind carry him back into the nest.
She also addressed viewers during more difficult updates — including the loss of a chick during a late-winter storm in 2025 and last month’s raven attack that breached Jackie and Shadow’s eggs while the pair was away from the nest.
During that January incident, Friends of Big Bear Valley told KTLA that both eggs were believed to have been damaged by the predator bird.
Through years of nesting seasons, Steers often described the eagles’ persistence as a lesson in resilience.
“No matter what’s going on, Jackie and Shadow just keep coming and bringing food,” she previously told KTLA.
Friends of Big Bear Valley said additional information will be shared at a later time.
