PRE-ORDER NOW FROM UDISCOVERMUSIC.COM
This morning, Universal unveiled a limited edition 4LP box set rounding up fourteen extended dance versions of Bee Gees classics. You Should Be Dancing: The 12″ Collection is available for pre-order now exclusively through the Bee Gees’ and Universal Music’s online storefront and is limited to 1,000 units only. It will ship on or around February 27. Alas, much like the last time the group’s extended mixes were reissued (2015’s Extended EP, on Rhino), this collection will be unavailable on compact disc.
You Should Be Dancing features the original Disco Mixes of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb’s Saturday Night Fever classics “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “More Than a Woman,” along with vintage seventies mixes of the pre-Fever dancefloor perennials “You Should Be Dancing,” “Boogie Child,” and “You Stepped Into My Life.” These tracks are joined by five previously unreleased extended mixes of 1975’s “Nights on Broadway” and “Jive Talkin’,” 1979’s “Tragedy” and “Love You Inside Out,” and “If I Can’t Have You.” (While Yvonne Elliman’s chart-topping take of “More Than a Woman” produced by Freddie Perren was included on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the Bee Gees’ own recording was placed on the flipside of “Stayin’ Alive.” Both “Jive Talkin’” and “You Should Be Dancing” were featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack despite pre-dating the film.)
SG Lewis’ 2021 remix of another Fever standard, “More Than a Woman,” was a viral hit; it makes its physical debut on this collection. (Both the Bee Gees’ and Tavares’ renditions of the song were included on the Fever soundtrack, with Tavares’ recording going to the top ten in the U.K. and the top 40 of the U.S. Pop and Soul charts). Lewis’ remix hit No. 6 on the Dance chart in 2021. You Should Be Dancing concludes with two 1993 mixes – the original album version and Ben Liebrand’s remix – of “Decadance,” a reimagined version of the box set’s title song.
