G-SHOCK watches by casio inspired by origami

Casio’s origami-inspired G-SHOCK watches let the wearer feel the texture of washi paper around the accessory’s bezel and band. Rooted in the traditions of Oshōgatsu, Japan’s New Year celebration, the models pay homage to the nation’s ancient craft. In fact, the series draws on the material used for origami, the washi paper, and reflects that by placing the tactile grain of washi on the surfaces of the timepiece design.

The bezel and band then are finished with a subtle, fibrous texture, introducing ‘paper’ molded with polymer. Across the bezel and strap, dotted line graphics replicate the visual guides used in origami diagrams. These markings indicate valley and mountain folds, which are the cues that direct users where to bend the paper. On the origami-inspired G-SHOCK watches, Casio applied this as an ornament, a direct reference to the traditional craft.

Image of crane appears on display and case back

The silhouettes of the origami-inspired G-SHOCK watches by Casio help make the crisp, interrupted lines of the timepiece design stand out. When light catches along these edges, they seem to glisten and further bring the design to light. They’re a form of symbolism, harking back to the craft practice, and this continues when the LED backlight turns on. Here, a crane appears on the display, widely recognized as a symbol of longevity and peace.

When the wearer flips the accessory, which forms part of the 5600 series by the company, this very same crane is seen embedded onto the case back. Even the packaging reflects origami tradition, as the box mirrors the color and texture of the washi paper, alongside the line designs around the accessory. From the looks of it, even the texture of the surfaces has the feel of the washi paper. As the company describes it, origami details are folded into every element, from the bezel and band to the packaging design.
