Timbersports community mourns Nathan McDonald after leukaemia battle

  • February 14, 2026

In a social media post, Timbersports New Zealand described McDonald as somebody who “embodied the true heart of our community”.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of the members of our Timbersports whānau, Nathan McDonald,” the post read.

“We honour an incredible athlete and the impact he made to everyone lucky enough to know Nathan both on and off the woodchopping stage. Nathan proudly represented New Zealand on the world stage, and inspired the next generation of woodchoppers who he generously gave his time to coach and support.

“His passion for helping others grow embodied the true heart of our community.

“Nathan’s legacy lives on through all those he inspired to compete with the same grit, discipline and heart. Our thoughts are with Nathan’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

McDonald most recently competed at the 2024 New Zealand Pro Championships, where he finished fourth.

His favourite event was the standing block.

The Rotorua Axemen’s club said they were heartbroken by the news.

“[He’s] a true woodchopping champion, a devoted family man, and a cherished friend to so many,” said a social media post.

“We send all our love and thoughts to Nathan’s wife Ilise and their beautiful daughters, to his parents Lyn and Richard, and to his brothers David and Willy. Our hearts are broken.”

The Tokoroa Axemen’s club also paid their respects.

“A kind, humble and truly good man who was always willing to help others,” said a social media post.

“A respected axeman and sawyer, he was a champion in every sense of the word – a true champion of champions. The woodchopping community has lost another loyal and much‑loved friend.”

A service to celebrate his life will be held at Waiuku Rugby Club on Thursday.
