This isn’t as blatant as the time Anthony Kiedis thought he was Irish but, well, noticeable nonetheless: Foo Fighters have released a new single, “Your Favorite Toy,” from their upcoming 12th album of the same name, a recording of which Dave Grohl used to debut a different and distorted singing style. The song also serves as a showcase for Ilan Rubin behind the kit following last year’s contentious drummer swap among rock bands. (A sample stanza: “Can’t keep my glasses clean / Candy and dopamine.”) In a statement, Grohl said that “Your Favorite Toy” — a bit Medicine at Midnight–sounding but also packs a Britpop punch? — was the track that “unlocked the tone and energetic direction of the new album,” which will be released on April 24. “We stumbled upon it after experimenting with different sounds and dynamics for over a year, and the day it took shape I knew that we had to follow its lead,” he explained. “It was the fuse to the powder keg of songs we wound up recording for this record. It feels new.” And yet the toy does seem a bit used.
