Motorola makes some great phones, but its poor software update support continues to hold it back. The company lags significantly behind competitors when it comes to rolling out timely updates, even for its flagship devices. Unfortunately, the company has done little to improve on this front. And due to this, US Razr Ultra (2025) and Razr owners are only now getting a taste of Android 16 — more than eight months after its initial public release.
Motorola was among the first companies to publish a list of devices eligible for Android 16, doing so within a week of Google releasing the update for Pixel phones. Since then, though, it has been a long wait for Moto phone owners, with the company running a limited beta program.
After months of testing, Motorola has pushed the stable Android 16 update for the Razr Ultra (2025) and Razr (2025) in the US on T-Mobile and Verizon networks (via YtechB). If you own an unlocked unit purchased directly from Motorola or through another retailer, you may have to wait a few more weeks for the update to arrive.
On the bright side, Motorola appears to have based its Android 16 build off QPR1, as its release notes mention the update brings a “more expressive design.” The firmware for the Razr Ultra weighs almost 4GB.
Despite being released in late February 2026, the Android 16 firmware for the Razrs features the December 2025 security patch.
A buggy experience
Unfortunately, based on Reddit reports from Razr owners outside the US who received the Android 16 update early, it appears to be riddled with bugs. Several users have reported issues with the cover display not working properly with apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, and X.
Given Motorola’s track record, it may take some time for the company to roll out a follow-up update to address these issues. If stability is a top priority for you, it might be wise to hold off on installing Android 16 for now.
Verizon and T-Mobile are rolling out the Android 16 update for the Razr Ultra (2025) and Razr in a phased manner. So, the firmware may not appear for download on your phone immediately.
