My Secret Auckland: The Nukes’ Josh Parker shares favourite spots in city

  • February 22, 2026

On weekend mornings, when my partner and I take a little too long getting ourselves sorted, our appetite usually leads us to Goodness Gracious Bagels. Deliciously stacked with top-tier toppings, they’re so generous you sometimes need a knife and fork.

Favourite restaurant for dinner with friends?

Our new local, which has only recently opened, is Just Falafel in Point Chevalier. As the name suggests, it’s the best falafel I’ve ever had. A simple, well-made menu, relaxed and friendly staff, and a great fridge selection of drinks I’ve never seen before.

Favourite place to take a visitor to?

We recently moved to Point Chev from Royal Oak, and one of my favourite places to get a real sense of the city is the top of Maungakiekie. It’s a fairly relaxed walk with the most incredible 360-degree views. There’s also a little secret track halfway up with a lookout bench, which was a delight to discover.

Favourite spot to finish a night out?

Like quite a few people lately, I’ve caught on to Goblin Bar in Ponsonby. Where the legendary Golden Dawn used to be located, this dark and woody interior warms your bones. Their live jazz nights are one of my favourite things about the city.

Favourite place to get coffee?

This one, hands down, goes to my absolute favourite: Small Mercies. Expert-level drinks, kkwabaegis (twisted Korean doughnuts), great tunes, and lovely people. I wish I could gatekeep them, but it feels wrong.

Favourite fish and chip shop?

Our family favourite fresh and/or fried fish shop has always been Bishop Fish and Chips. Many fond memories of losing Mum and Dad’s spare change down the golf-themed coin-drop game.

Favourite trail for a hike?

Kitekite Falls is a lovely short and easy walk, complete with a swim at the end. It’s an area I’d love to explore more now that I’ve mostly got my hay fever medication sorted. Spending more time in nature is definitely in for 2026.

Favourite venue for a gig?

A very hard one for me, but I’d ultimately say The Hollywood in Avondale. The vibe is strong, and I love being able to sit down with a solid view. I’ve seen some of my favourite movies and acts in that space – there’s something special about the lean of the stage that adds an extra level.

Favourite place to find a bargain?

At Avondale College, we competed in the Stand Up Stand Out competition. While we were in Ōtara for the day, we’d walk around the community centre picking up some of the meanest and cheapest feeds around. A kind of heaven for kids with only a little lunch money to spend.

Josh Parker is a member of The Nukes, who will launch their new children’s song Vege Punk at Hamilton Arts Festival Toi Ora ki Kirikiriroa on February 28.
