Apple has announced a significant update to its CarPlay system, which adds video streaming amongst a raft of AI-powered features.
As part of iOS 26.4, the video streaming function will allow drivers and passengers to watch videos on a vehicle’s display whilst it is parked.
It is currently only available to developers through the iOS 26.4 beta, but some tech YouTubers have already got their hands on it for testing.
Similar to AirPlay, Apple users will simply open a video on their phone, and select the casting menu to project it to the infotainment system.
An Apple TV app has also been added to the in-car system, which will allow occupants to access media directly from the streaming service.
This would be particularly useful for electric vehicle owners looking to pass time while their vehicle is charging.
Aside from these video updates, Apple is also adding AI chatbots to CarPlay, which are powered by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
These bots won’t be able to control car functions like Siri does currently, but will be able to operate within their respective apps.
Apple hasn’t said when it expects this new iOS 26.4 will be made available, but rumours have it releasing in Autumn of this year.
