A night full of laughter, dancing and singing was brought by the Kearney International Center, which invited students, faculty and staff to experience the global phenomenon of K-Pop during this year’s Signature Night on Friday.
The event encouraged everyone to unwind in an evening filled with music, dance, food and cultural celebration. This year’s theme reflected the worldwide impact of Korean pop music as Yejin Oh, International Student Engagement Assistant, explains how K-Pop, as a globally popular music genre from South Korea, continues to achieve massive international success. Groups such as BLACKPINK, BTS and Stray Kids have topped the Billboard charts with multiple No. 1 hits on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100. K-Pop Demon Hunters has highlighted the global influence of Korean pop culture.
“With K-Pop continuing to shape entertainment trends, we felt inspired to center this year’s Signature Night around this genre,” Oh said.
Signature Night is a long-standing tradition each spring semester.
“Each Spring semester, the Kearney International Center hosts Signature Night to provide our enthusiastic population of international students with opportunities to share their cultures with a broader audience, including domestic students, faculty, and staff. This event features globally themed food and student performances. Our Center works closely with student groups, mentoring and supporting them as they organize engaging cultural celebrations like K-Pop Night,” Oh said.
The night’s main attraction was the performance made by K-One, the campus dance club.
“During the event, our campus dance club, K-One, will perform a variety of live K-Pop dance performances that they have been rehearsing specifically for this night,” Oh said. “The performances are primarily student-led, and there will be no guest performers.”
Audience members didn’t just sit and watch; no, they also had the opportunity to participate.
“We scheduled interactive moments during the evening when students, faculty, and staff can join K-One in the Ballroom to learn some basic dance moves together,” Oh said.
The goal of the evening was more than just entertainment; it was also about connection.
“We hope to create an energetic atmosphere where students can bring their enthusiasm for dance and music, connect with other people, and join in celebrating the global trend of K-Pop,” she said.
“We believe students will especially enjoy watching their peers perform, celebrating together as a campus community.”
Guests were also delighted with delicious food and fun extras.
“Guests will also be able to enjoy food, including Karaage Chicken with Japanese mayo and Tempura Green Beans with Ponzu sauce. Additionally, there will be a photobooth set up at the backside of the Ballroom where guests can take fun selfies to remember the night,” Oh said.
Oh concluded by expressing gratitude.
“We would like to express our appreciation in advance to everyone helping make this event a success, especially K-One and Chef James, whose collaboration has been instrumental in bringing K-Pop Night to life,” Oh said.
With music, movement and community at its core, K-Pop Night was a vibrant celebration of global culture right on campus.
