One of Marvel’s most iconic heroes is swinging to a new streaming home in March.
The past 25 years have seen Spider-Man become one of the best-performing superhero properties on the big screen, beginning with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s trilogy in the early 2000s, which is also credited with revitalizing the comic book adaptation genre, before continuing with Andrew Garfield’s reboot duology in the 2010s. More recently, the franchise has seen success with both the animated Spider-Verse films and Tom Holland-led Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, which are about to continue with Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July.
Now, with four months left until the next film hits theaters, HBO Max is bringing multiple Spider-Man movies to the streaming platform. Beginning March 1, both the Maguire trilogy and Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man films, which are also available on Disney+, will premiere on the WarnerMedia streamer. This also comes just in time for the latter set of films leaving Netflix on February 27.
Both Spider-Man franchises making their way to HBO Max come as something of a surprise, given Sony has largely been teaming with Netflix and Disney+ for streaming the Marvel hero. This largely worked to keep viewers caught up on all things Peter Parker, especially as No Way Home’s multiverse story brought all three live-action incarnations together.
In the time since the 2021 film’s success, fans of both series have called for Maguire and Garfield to get proper sequels to their films, particularly after each saw their fourth and third films, respectively, scrapped due to mixed responses and underwhelming box office numbers sparking reboots. Both Raimi and Garfield have shot down the possibility of new Spider-Man films, feeling that the MCU focus has made it so that the door is closed for them, but are still open to the possibility if it comes about.
Maguire and Garfield’s movies making a shift to HBO Max also come amid rumors that the pair will be back for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which the pair have had to begin denying much in the way they did with the previous film. However, this would also put the film in a nebulous space between a multiverse story and a new MCU tale, as it’s already confirmed to feature the returns of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Mark Ruffalo’s Hullk and Michael Mando’s Scorpion, as well as Sadie Sink’s introduction as a mystery character and Marvin Jones III as iconic mobster Tombstone.

In addition to marking an overall new streaming home for the franchises, the Spider-Man films are now one of the few Marvel properties to be available on HBO Max. Prior to Maguire and Garfield’s films, the only ones available on the streamer have been that of Logan and X-Men: First Class. With WarnerMedia’s ownership of DC, it makes sense that they’ve largely kept HBO Max to only housing adaptations of said publisher’s works, but it will be interesting to see if this is just the start of more Marvel films coming to the platform.
