Petzl has announced a recall of certain Nomic and Ergonomic ice axes due to a risk of handle failure that could cause falls and serious injury.
Affected Models and Dates: NOMIC U021AA00: Manufactured Dec. 2017 – June 2020; ERGONOMIC U022AA00: Manufactured June 2018 – Dec. 2021.
Not affected: Previous generations of NOMIC (U21, U21 x) and ERGONOMIC (U22, U22 x).
Why the Recall? Several cases of ice axes breaking at the handle have been reported. Testing revealed the durability of these batches does not meet Petzl’s quality standards. Failures occur without warning.
What to Do
Stop using affected ice axes immediately. Check if your axe is affected using Petzl’s recall tool. Request a replacement shaft via your local Petzl after-sales service.
