Central Otago grass fire threatens homes as crews battle blaze

Fire and Emergency has responded to a grass fire in Otago.

A grass fire in Central Otago has threatened homes and caused crews from at least six stations to respond.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said firefighters were alerted to a fast-moving grass fire threatening homes in Springvale, just outside Clyde, about 3.25pm.

“Crews from Cromwell, Ōmakau, Alexandra, Blackstone, Clyde
and as far as Dunedin are trying to get the blaze under control,” the spokesperson said.

Two helicopters are at the scene, and the spokesperson said the blaze had grown to 400m by 400m at 4pm.
