The CBS Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, is a sprawling procedural. While entertaining, it needs more time to earn the brand, the red-hot Y variety that graduates into a frontier ethos of a cowboy in the modern world. Instead of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday’s Colt Single Action Army, Kayce Dutton carries a variety of modern tactical carbines.
The neo-Western has its moments, but it depends heavily on your enjoyment of the lead character and the rugged, masculine backdrop that tells classic, modern-day frontier stories. However, one thing is certain: Marshals allows a character from Yellowstone that was lost in the shuffle to breathe and stand on his own. A worthy reclamation for Kayce and the indelible franchise.

After the Dutton family tragedy, Kayce (Luke Grimes) returned his family’s land to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and the Broken Rock Reservation. While keeping a small lot of land for himself, he is recruited by his old commander, Pete Calvin (Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Logan Marshall-Green), a former Navy SEAL working in Montana.
Pete is heading a team for the U.S. Marshall, working for Harry Gilford (Lost’s Brett Cullen). Kayce turns them down, but serves as their guide through the treacherous terrain, tracking potential domestic terrorists. Then, when a bomb goes off, injuring a high-ranking member of Broken Rock’s leadership.
Of course, even though the team is made up of Miles, a tenacious rookie (Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Tatanka Means), Belle (Arielle Kebbel from the After franchise), a former ATF agent with something to prove, and Andrea Cruz (American Horror Story’s Ash Santos), Kayce decides he has something to prove, joining the team, to protect the land he calls home.
CBS’s Marshals Review

You’ll notice almost immediately that Marshals is different from any other Taylor Sheridan–produced series. For one, he doesn’t write a single episode of this Yellowstone spinoff, a first in the franchise’s rich history. Sure, the theme of land as religion is still there, as well as mythic masculinity, moral ambiguity, and the use of space and silence to carry a scene or two.
Sheridan writes without the need for exposition. He is the opposite of Aaron Sorkin; there’s no impulse to fill pages with every thought, instead relying on the power of economical dialogue. His writing crackles with a slow burn, aphoristic, almost biblical, sharpened by an unmistakable wit. This chapter of Yellowstone, however, feels more like “Marshal Country,” a procedural.
However, there is something liberating about the new series, unshackled from the Dutton family legacy, as Kayce blazes a new path. Of course, there are references, especially in the pilot, to remind core fans to stick with this latest iteration. The show is overtly masculine, sprawling, and engrossing, pulling viewers into the action within the first few minutes.
Is CBS’s Marshals worth watching?

The show begins to find its Yellowstone before it, holstering the formula that made the franchise of shows great. However, Grimes keeps the show from straying too far. He brings magnetism, strength, and rare vulnerability to a network show, along with confident action, making the pilot suspenseful and riveting enough to recommend through the first handful of chapters.
Ultimately, Marshals is worth watching for fans of procedurals and the Sheridan noteworthy franchise. However, with only three episodes, it is hard to stick your neck out for a show that rarely takes risks, especially if they stick to the CBS formula. Sheridan has managed to juggle the best of both worlds. However, we have yet to see if it lives up to the legend or is a cheap knockoff.
You can watch Marshals on CBS starting March 1st and stream on Paramount+ the next day. The first three episodes were screened for critics.
