Ahead of the show’s premiere, actor Luke Grimes opened up about reprising his role as rancher-turned-U.S. marshal Kayce Dutton.
He also mentioned why it’s a lot more “fun” to portray Kayce in a new setting.

Viewers of Yellowstone remember Luke for portraying Kayce Dutton throughout the show’s five-season run. Now, he’s stepping into Kayce’s shoes for a second time, as the Yellowstone spinoff series Marshals premieres on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. The new show sees Kayce becoming a U.S. marshal deep in the heart of Texas, and folks are curious to see if the character will still be the brooding individual many know from years earlier.
Luke has something to say about what fans can expect from Kayce on Marshals, and he opened up to Entertainment Weekly about it for an Instagram video on February 24. When asked about Kayce’s trajectory this time around, Luke admitted that he’s been enjoying reprising him in ways viewers may not necessarily expect.
“I would say it’s actually kind of fun,” he shared with the outlet. “There was nothing really fun about Kayce’s arc in the original show. He was just always having a pretty rough time. There was just constantly something going wrong, and he was no stranger to pain. But in this show, you get to see a bit of a lighter side—but not too light! It’s not fluffy or anything.”

As fans remember, Kayce had several storylines throughout Yellowstone. He had a dramatic love story with his wife, Monica (Kesley Asbille), and they also faced many challenges as they expanded their family. Kayce was also helping out his family at the Dutton ranch, which always seemed to be a hub of activity.
But now that Kayce has his own show, what will fans gain from seeing his story continue? As Luke told the outlet in a separate interview, there’s still some darkness in his character.
“There’s a reason why Kayce is the only one with the black hat,” he noted. “He’s got a lot going on in his soul. Clearly, he’s got demons, and his arc was trying to heal and find his path. In the original Yellowstone, he did that.”
“Kayce feels like a brother in a weird way,” he added. “I was really surprised by how quickly my soul and my mind wanted to dive back into that. Who would’ve thought it would be for this long, you know? But I’m still really enjoying the ride.”
