Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) will soon return to the ranch for the first Yellowstone sequel series: Marshals. The show will follow John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) son as he puts his cowboying days behind him and joins a special branch of the U.S. Marshals. Kayce sold his family’s ranch in the Yellowstone season 5 finale, but he didn’t give away his sense of justice.

According to show’s official logline, Kayce and his new teammates “must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.” Montana is also reportedly “infiltrated by the most violent criminal network in this hemisphere,” which is a little hard to believe—but we’re here for the drama.

“Honestly, I did not think I was going to do it,” Grimes told Esquire about joining the spinoff last summer. “I remember saying I didn’t know if it would make any sense. Then there were a lot of ideas getting thrown around, and at some point I heard a really good idea and that was kind of it. I thought, Actually, that opens up the world for him. And putting the hat and jacket back on isn’t all that bad. I really liked playing that character. It was the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had in my life, so I’m happy not to say goodbye to him fully.”

Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill are all returning to the series alongside Grimes, and, of course, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan will serve as executive producer. Spencer Hednut (SEAL Team) is heading up the showrunner duties for Marshals, which premieres on CBS this Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET. The series will also stream on Paramount+ the next day.

Now, because this is the Yellowstone-verse we’re talking about here, there’s very little information about what we’re about to see. Variety reported in August that the first season will run for 13 episodes, but Paramount has yet to confirm. It also remains unclear just what level of involvement Sheridan had in the ongoing story of the Dutton family following the end of Yellowstone. We’ll find out more after Marshals premieres this Sunday, including (hopefully) what happened to Kayce’s wife Monica (Kelsey Ashbile).
