HONG KONG SUNDAY
Prior to flying down to Melbourne, Bowman has a busy day ahead of him at Sha Tin this Sunday, as he’ll combine with fellow Aussie Mark Newnham in the two feature events.
Bowman will be out to cause an upset in the G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup when he rides up-and-comer My Wish against 2023 Cox Plate hero, Romantic Warrior.
Bowman has often warmed the seat for James McDonald aboard Romantic Warrior in his trackwork and trials, describing him as a “special horse” but he doesn’t concede that he’s already over the line this weekend.
“It’s a horse race, so you never really know,” Bowman said.
“I think if all things are equal, Romantic Warrior has a trouble-free run and there’s no surprises, well, I would have to say I think he’s got the measure of the field, clearly, but you just never know.
“My horse is ready to run a really good race and I’m sure he will.”
Later in the afternoon, the four-time Cox Plate winner will continue his association with Invincible Ibis in the Hong Kong Classic Cup over 1800m.
Bowman is pleased that Invincible Ibis has been allocated barrier two in the middle leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which culminates with the Hong Kong Derby on March 22.
“That’s a much better scenario than the outside barrier in the Classic Mile,” he said.
“He’s ticking over nicely, so I’m looking forward to riding him again.”
Bowman was in the winner’s circle at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and is currently in second place in the Hong Kong jockeys’ premiership on 35 wins, chasing tearaway leader and fellow Aussie, Zac Purton.
