Nine years ago, Stefano Casiraghi Borromeo arrived as one of the most anticipated royal births in Europe. On February 28, 2017, Pierre Casiraghi and Beatrice Borromeo welcomed their first child, a golden-haired boy destined to carry forward two of the continent’s most storied lineages, the Grimaldis of Monaco and the Borromeo family of Italy.

From the very beginning, Stefano has embodied that distinctive mixture of royalty and warmth that so defines his parents. While his position places him firmly within Monaco’s inner circle, it is in the tender moments with his mother that we see a different side. Beatrice’s affectionate gestures, a gentle embrace, a protective glance, and a quiet word in his ear reveal the close bond they share and offer rare glimpses into their private world.

A name steeped in history

In royal families, names carry significant meaning. Stefano was chosen in tribute to his paternal grandfather, Stefano Casiraghi, the husband of Princess Caroline, who tragically lost his life in a boating accident in 1990 while competing to defend his offshore world championship title. His passing left a profound mark on Monaco and on his young family.

The choice of Ercole and Carlo further honors Beatrice’s father and brother, weaving together the heritage of two distinguished families. It is a name that carries memory, legacies, and continuity.

A familiar face on Monaco’s National Day

Although Pierre and Beatrice carefully safeguard their children’s privacy, Stefano has become a cherished presence during Monaco’s National Day celebrations. Standing on the balcony of the Prince’s Palace alongside his cousins, dressed in a classic coat, he often captures attention with his spontaneous waves and candid expressions.

The resemblance to his father at the same age is unmistakable. He shares the same features and possesses the same poised demeanor. It remains to be seen if he will also inherit the Casiraghi’s passion for sailing and the sea, but the maritime spirit is deeply ingrained in the family.

Blue blood on both sides

As the grandson of Princess Caroline, Stefano is part of the Grimaldi dynasty and a great-grandson of Grace Kelly, one of the most iconic princesses in modern history. Yet his maternal roots are equally remarkable.

Since the sixteenth century, the Borromeo family has maintained a connection with the enchanting islands of Lake Maggiore. Isola Madre, Isola Bella and San Giovanni form a picturesque archipelago that remains under the family’s care. It was in this extraordinary setting that Pierre and Beatrice celebrated their religious wedding, surrounded by centuries of art, history and tradition.

The role of big brother

Stefano’s reign as the youngest was brief. In 2018, his brother Francesco Carlo Albert was born, and in October 2025, the family welcomed a daughter, Bianca Carolina Marta. With her arrival, Stefano embraced his role as the eldest of three.

For a child born into such remarkable heritage, it is perhaps within his own family that his most important role lies. Beyond titles and dynasties, he is a grandson and a son, and now he is a dedicated big brother.
