The new Yellowstone spinoff Marshals is finally here, and the show quickly answered a burning question fans have had since the trailer dropped.
Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched the premiere of Marshals, be warned that spoilers are ahead.
Marshals picks up with Kayce Dutton’s story after the end of the Yellowstone series. It’s not clear exactly how much time has passed, but Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his teenage son Tate (Breckin Merrill) have settled on their East Camp ranch. It’s clear from the opening scene that Kayce’s wife, Monica, has died. Fans have speculated that Monica would be killed off, as teased in the trailer. Plus, Kelsey Asbille’s name hasn’t been included in any casting news.
The Dutton family story has been filled with tragedy, but Kayce’s wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) did not meet a violent end like many of the other characters on the show. Instead, she died of cancer.

In the first episode, Kayce joins Pete, his friend from his Navy SEAL days, in an operation with the U.S. Marshals. Pete deputizes Kayce, and their squad stands guard at a demonstration on the Broken Rock Reservation, where members are protesting a nearby government mine that has caused several of the members to develop cancer. Tate holds a framed photo of his mother as he joins the protest.
Kayce talks to Gil Rainwater and Mo, who recall Monica’s funeral and remind him that her spirit is still with him. At the episode, Kayce visits her grave and tells her, “I miss my wife, my best friend. My only friend. I’ve been so lost. The best part of me died with you. You always told me to fight for the life I want. But I had the life I wanted. It was with you. I’m changing paths, going to try to find a new beginning for me and Tate.”
Where will Kayce’s story go from here? Tune in to Marshals on Sunday nights to find out, or stream the episodes on Paramount+.
