Last updated in 2019, Shimano’s new Tiagra line is now a 2×11-speed mechanical road groupset (rather than a 2X10). Upgrades to ergonomics, weight and gear range are also included in the new Tiagra R4000 set. Shimano positions it as, “modernized road performance at an attainable price.”

Wider gears without the weight penalty

The big change is taking the derailleur and cassette from a a 10-speed system to an 11-speed system. The new 2×11 set up delivers a 327 per cent gear range. That means easier gears for going up, while still offering enough top end for fast group rides, long descents and/or tail winds.

The cassette uses Shimano’s Hyperglide technology for smooth, predictable shifts.

Updated derailleurs

The R4000 rear derailleur pairs compact construction with reliability. The FD-R4000 front derailleur uses Shimano’s toggle-link design to reduce shift effort and improve consistency.

Shimano says the system maintains compatibility with traditional road bike geometry, including small q-factors, short chainstays and larger chainring options.

At the centre of the overhaul is a shifter that fits more hands more comfortably.

The, “redesigned lever position and bracket, developed through research on various hand shapes, ensure superior comfort and control for road cyclists.” says their press release.

Crank options for different riding styles

The FC-R4000 crankset comes in two of the more common road options: 52-36T for riders that are looking for speed and 50-34T for those looking to climb. Cranks are available in 165, 170, 172.5, and 175mm lengths.

Familiar reliability where it counts

Not everything is new. The groupset uses Shimano’s existing CN-HG601-11 chain. Hydraulic disc braking is integrated into the new shifters, and they come with pre-bled calipers.

Modern road performance without the premium price

Tiagra offers dependable performance for riders who don’t need electronic shifting or ultra-light components. The R4000 update stays true to that mission while modernizing the package.
