Over the years, Samsung has made slight design changes to its Galaxy Z Flip series. The first-gen model came with a tiny display, and subsequent generations saw Samsung increase it in size. But now, a recently discovered patent has revealed that Samsung is exploring the idea of putting two displays on the cover of a future Galaxy Z Flip model.
Future Samsung Galaxy Z Flip phone could sport two displays
In the patent discovered by 91mobiles, Samsung could be looking to include two displays on the front of the Galaxy Z Flip. As you can see in the patent diagram, one display features a circular cutout, while the other display wraps around it, covering the top half of the phone.
If this looks familiar, it’s because the Huawei P50 Pocket also featured a circular cutout display on the front of the phone. The main difference is that it didn’t have a second display. But otherwise, we think this patent is rather reminiscent of Huawei’s own flip foldable phone.

We’re not sure what the point of the second smaller display is. The front display is already big enough to act as a viewfinder for the camera. It can also display notifications and run apps. Having a second display just feels like a battery drain and is a bit unnecessary.
That being said, it’s no use getting so worked up over it. Companies file patents all the time. Most of the time it’s to protect intellectual property, and not necessarily about creating a product they plan to commercialize. This isn’t to say it won’t happen but maybe don’t hold your breath.
What can we expect in future Galaxy Z Flip phones?
Samsung has been hard at work launching new foldables each year. This year, Samsung officially brought the Galaxy Z TriFold to the US. Later this year, we expect the company to refresh its Fold and Flip series.
This includes the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which is the successor to last year’s Flip 7 model. So far, the rumors claim that the Flip 8 could be thinner than last year’s model. It is also rumored to be powered by Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 2600 chipset. However, don’t expect too much from the camera.
According to the latest rumors, Samsung could keep the same camera config found in the Flip 7. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but we would have liked to see an improvement. Samsung doesn’t have a launch date yet, but rumors are pointing towards a possible July announcement.
