Charles Leclerc has ended the opening free practice session of the year on top of the timesheet.

The Monegasque driver clocked a time that was four-tenths faster than team-mate Lewis Hamilton in second, in a session that was largely Ferrari vs Red Bull.

Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar in the two Red Bull entries were third and fourth respectively.

Aston Martin endured a nightmare session – Fernando Alonso failed to make an appearance, while Lance Stroll clocked just three laps.

There were also issues for reigning champion Lando Norris, who retired with a gearbox issue, while Arvid Lindblad and Alex Albon stopped on the track during the session.
