As exciting as it is that a Firefly reboot might be happening, the cult sci-fi series coming back will bring doom to Nathan Filion’s 8-season crime show that is currently at its peak. The seminal sci-fi series premiered in 2002 and built a cult following.
Despite only running for one season, the show created by Joss Whedon have maintained its fan-base, with a brand new generation discovering it through streaming, continuing its relevance. Firefly was followed up by the film, Serenity, which effectively continued the story of the series. From there, it expanded to other formats, including comic book stories.
24 years since the cancellation of the show, rumors of a Firefly reboot have started going around after Fillion, Gina Torres, and their other co-stars shared a video on social media teasing a reunion project. There hasn’t been any official word about the top-secret project, but considering the devotion of its loyal fan-base, not to mention the popularity of revisiting established IPs, it’s arguably the perfect time to do a Firefly revival.
A Firefly Revival Could Create Scheduling Problems With ABC’s The Rookie

Nolan on The Rookie season 8Disney
Unfortunately, doing so will have some consequences for FIllion’s ongoing top-rated cop show — The Rookie. Since 2018, the actor has played the role of the show’s titular character, John Nolan. Created by Alexi Hawley for ABC, the project has become an integral part of the network’s programming, and that’s truer than ever in the ongoing 2025-2026 TV cycle. While not at the top in terms of same-day viewing, The Rookie is massive when factoring streams on Hulu, not to mention its prominence on social media.
If a Firefly reboot does move forward, it only makes sense that FIllion will be at the forefront of the series. Granted that a lot of revivals only use original characters to set up next generation story players, but considering its short run, it’s safe to assume that this project is only worth doing if it will be a comeback vehicle for its ensemble cast. Mal will likely still be the show’s face, which will require him to be ever-present throughout production.

Now I Understand Why The Rookie Is Breaking Up Nolan & Bailey
Initially. Nolan and Bailey’s marital issue on The Rookie season 8 seemed to come out of nowhere. Now, however, I understand the real reason for it.
While the scheduling can be sorted out in a way that the actor can do both the potential Firefly reboot and The Rookie, there’s still a chance that Fillion will have to miss some time in the latter. As a show on network TV, the cop show produces more episodes every year than its streaming counterparts. This means that production is also longer, with actors only getting a few months of break between spring and summer.
Can The Rookie Survive Without John Nolan?
ABC has yet to make an official announcement about the fate of The Rookie season 9, but initial reports claim that the show is likely to return for the 2026-2027 TV cycle. If the time comes and Fillion does indeed have to miss time from the network show, it will be interesting to see how it will handle his absence. Frankly, it’s highly unlikely that The Rookie will write out Nola. While he has long outgrown the original role of being a rookie, he remains as the show’s poster character.
That said, The Rookie’s story has been effectively diversified in the last few years. Hawley has taken advantage of the show’s ensemble, developing the rest of the cast their respective compelling narratives. Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford are navigating this new chapter in their romance, while Nyla Cox has returned to her TO days by being paired with Miles Penn. Suffice it to say, there are enough non-Nolan stories that could sustain The Rookie for a period of time, assuming that Fillion really needs to miss time.
