Emmerdale viewers have been waiting for the outcome of Mackenzie Boyd’s time in John Sugden’s bunker for weeks now.

Actor Lawrence Robb has certainly celebrated his fifth anniversary on the ITV soap in style, with him coming under the fire of killer John Sugden.

As viewers will recall, Mackenzie had his suspicions at first when John Sugden arrived in the village and swept Aaron Dingle off his feet.

Although he eventually agreed to a truce for the sake of Aaron, things soon shifted once he learned of John’s link to Nate Robinson’s murder.

Sadly, John was one step ahead and as Mack tried to run away John hunted him down in a vicious attack. Having shot Mack through the chest with a bow, he then smashed a giant rock down onto him after Mack tried to reason with him.

In the episodes that followed, it was revealed that Mack was being held captive in a creepy underground bunker just moments away from John’s childhood home.

Aaron eventually figured out that John had been drugging him, and soon connected more dots after finding Mack’s phone in John’s pocket.

On the hunt for his best friend, John intervened and confessed every single one of his harrowing crimes to Aaron. Robert Sugden then showed up, but John’s jealousy overruled his actions as he called the police to frame Robert before throwing himself and Aaron over the edge of the gorge.

Since then, Aaron was put in an induced coma and John – with less severe injuries – was attempting to plot what to do next to keep his secrets buried.

During Thursday’s (September 18) hour-long installment, John’s reign of terror came to its final blow as Aaron told Chas about Mackenzie the day before.

With Cain having dropped John off at the cottage unaware, the race was on to find Mack and John. Upon learning the news about her husband, Charity ignored protocol and raced into the bunker ahead of the police, but Mack was nowhere to be seen.

Not to mention, Cain finally learned who killed Nate, sat by his grave in disbelief with Moira by his side.

In a shocking twist of events, John was then seen carrying a very malnourished Mack into the hospital, and immediately fled the scene as soon as his hostage received medical attention.

During a particularly emotional scene, Charity waited by his bedside before he finally opened his eyes, with Charity kissing the top of his head with relief.

With John’s final act of heroism, there’s no clue as to where he disappeared to. On a Reddit thread, fans couldn’t believe the last few moments.

Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
