The limestone sculptures have been installed in Shipley Market Square as part of a wider regeneration project and were hand-carved by Yorkshire sculptor Dan Jones.

Mr Jones said: “The ram, ewes and lambs were designed, hand carved and polished in my Yorkshire workshop.

“They took around three months to carve and install.

“It was really special to be able to capture something with such meaning to mark a new chapter for the market square.

“I hope the sculptures will be enjoyed – and played upon – by generations to come.”

The sheep reference the town’s name, which is derived from the Old English meaning “sheep pasture.”

The sculptures replace the damaged “Shipley shopper” artwork and sit alongside recent landscaping improvements.

The planting on Well Croft includes a mixed shrub and herbaceous bed, with a wildflower grass meadow around the sheep installation.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, transport and planning, said: “Dan’s work really caught our attention – it is beautifully made and is robust, yet tactile.”

The market square redevelopment has been delivered by Bradford Council using £3m acquired through the Government-funded Shipley Towns Fund and a further £1m from Streets for People funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
