The Vernon Public Art Gallery is hosting a new exhibit.
From March 20 to May 20, the VPAG will be showing Portals to Elsewhere by Canadian artist Amy J. Dyck.
“In Portals to Elsewhere, Dyck presents a vibrant body of work spanning sculpture, painting, drawing, and collage that invites viewers into an imaginative dreamscape populated by hybrid figures and otherworldly creatures,” said the VPAG. “Drawing from her lived experience with chronic illness, Dyck constructs a world where bodies are not bound by physical limitations, but instead transform freely, assembled from a myriad of parts that grant the figures new abilities and possibilities.”
VPAG Executive Director Dauna Kennedy said Dyck’s “work invites viewers into a richly imagined world where vulnerability and strength coexist. Through her inventive characters and dreamlike environments, she offers a powerful reflection on transformation, resilience, and the ways creativity can help us reimagine our relationship to our bodies and our experiences.”
The opening reception for Portals to Elsewhere alongside I’m in this World, Doing by Vivian Smith and Blooming Together by Cool Arts Society, will take place on Thursday, March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Vernon Public Art Gallery, 3228 31 Ave.
The community is invited to attend, meet the artists, and take in an evening of conversation around the exhibition. Light refreshments will be served.
An artist talk with Amy J. Dyck will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 1 to 2 p.m., offering visitors an opportunity to hear directly from the artist about her practice and the ideas behind Portals to Elsewhere.
