The NZ Spirits Awards Committee has announced the decision to reinstate New World whisky onto its list of categories.

The decision was initially made not to separate New World and Old World whisky styles this year, with organisers saying the change was made in an attempt to align all spirits.

But after “plenty of concern and passion” around the change, New World whisky is now its own category.

“Our aim was and remains to improve the standards, objectivity across all spirit categories whether made in New Zealand or abroad.”

Organisers say they are “always willing to listen to the wider community” and they thank everyone who constructively shared in the discussions.
