You’ve probably heard of theme dressing or method dressing, thanks to stars like Margot Robbie, Ariana Grande, and Cynthia Erivo’s recent successes in incorporating fashion into their movie promotion efforts. The under-30 population’s favorite actress, Zendaya, has a new movie to market this month, and she seems to be taking it a step further than theme dressing: These days, she’s theme living. Method living? Basically, she and her team have devised a way for her press tour for her upcoming movie The Drama, which is about an engaged couple, to perfectly intersect with chatter about her personal life—chatter that she has thus far coyly avoided addressing. While it seems like all of Hollywood has embraced theme dressing, this one may be a little harder for other stars to replicate.
Zendaya has been in a relationship with her Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland since at least 2021, after they first met and dated several years before. Their engagement was reported early last year, after Zendaya wore a Jessica McCormack rock on her ring finger to the Golden Globes. She didn’t speak a word about it, but the mere act of flashing it was enough to prompt countless headlines.
That the news only came out after the ring was clocked in public is in keeping with the couple’s tendency to only reveal a limited amount about their relationship to the world, emphasizing privacy while letting the occasional public appearance do the talking. Contrast that to last year’s other biggest engagement news, when Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their intention to tie the knot in August. That one hit Instagram shortly after it happened, and Swift and Kelce have both spoken about it publicly since. Not so for Tom and Z, who have been characteristically mum about the proposal, wedding plans, all of it.
That brings us to a few weeks ago, when Zendaya’s longtime stylist, known loose talker Law Roach, hit the red carpet at the awards show formerly known as the SAGs and shared, almost offhandedly, that his client and Holland were already married. “The wedding has already happened,” Roach told Access Hollywood. “You missed it.” Asked for clarification, he doubled down: “It’s very true!” The reporter’s incredulity was echoed by fans watching at home—surely Roach had to be joking, because there’s no way the stars would want him spilling that kind of information when they’re so private, right? But who follows up a joke with “It’s very true!”? (My theory is that Roach was not telling tales out of school and was in fact deputized to drop this information and make it look casual.) Zendaya has since been seen—at the Oscars, at Paris Fashion Week—wearing what looks like a wedding band. So it certainly seems like they’re married. While this would make sense—an engagement tends to be followed by a marriage, after all—what remains hard to believe is that two such big stars are attempting the gambit of simply not revealing whether or not it happened, while letting their ring fingers speak for themselves.
So far, they’re getting away with it. What’s more, they’re getting away with it while Zendaya has been wearing a series of bridal looks, including an actual wedding dress to her film’s premiere this week. She has a surface-level excuse: In The Drama, she plays a woman who is about to marry a man played by Robert Pattinson, at least until the film’s already-infamous twist kicks in. This is all well and good, but come on, they’re playing with us too, in increasingly brazen ways. We all nosily want to know if Zendaya and her sweetheart are married. She’s not going to tell us that … but she is going to parade around in a wedding dress. In further adventures in trolling, the actress showed up at a wedding in Las Vegas last weekend as part of a promotional stunt, and in so doing either revealed nothing or dropped some more clues, depending on your interpretation. I hope she’s getting a good laugh out of all this!

There’s No Question That It’s the Greatest Snack America Has Produced. So Why Has It Fallen Out of Favor?
Her most impressive feat in this extended bit may have been her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show this week. She debunked the A.I.-generated wedding photos that have been circulating—good, because that dress was not special enough to be thee Zendaya’s wedding dress. She then announced that she was sharing some footage of her wedding, but it turned out to be a clip from her new movie with Holland’s face superimposed over Pattinson’s. I know Kimmel is an entertainer, not a journalist, but I was still shocked that he never made her give a straight answer to the question on everybody’s mind. Then again, I would be intimidated by Zendaya too.
With three other movies coming out this year, Zendaya will have a lot of press to navigate in the coming months, as will Holland. Is there any way she can make it through without confirming the marriage, or sharing even the tiniest detail? Her slate of films includes a Christopher Nolan movie and the next installments of the Dune and Spider-Man franchises, so it strikes me that if any movie needed the added boost of the intrigue of her personal life, it was probably The Drama. So she found a way to both leverage her private life and reveal nothing, to have it both ways. Eventually, though, she’ll strategically drop the word husband. I predict it sometime in Q2.
