One person said their daughter thought there was an earthquake after the explosion hit.
“I’m around the corner, and it shook my house a bit,” one wrote.
“My whole pl shook so hard I thought it was a quake,” another said.
Hato Hone St John said they attended the fire in Aranui.
Four vehicles attended, and two patients in a serious condition were treated.
Both people were transported to Christchurch Hospital.
Fire and Emergency NZ told the Herald they received initial calls that people were trapped inside the home.
The people were able to safely self-evacuate.
Fire and Emergency said three fire trucks attended and the blaze was extinguished at 8.30pm.
