After a few nights off, the soulful blues rockers of the Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the illustrious Beacon Theatre on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Wednesday for the second week of their ten-show residency. The single extended set featured sit-ins from guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco) and bassist Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre), a pair of Bob Dylan tunes, and a rare Rolling Stones cover, among a slew of original Tedeschi Trucks Band blues-infused rock songs.
The 12-piece powerhouse opened the fifth night of the run as it did 2022’s I Am The Moon, with a lofty “Hear My Dear” eclipsing “Fall In”. Gabe Dixon added vocals and an organ solo to the opener before Derek Trucks slammed the door with a signature slide guitar solo. Equipped with an acoustic guitar, Mike Mattison’s gravelly vocals took center stage to lay the foundation for the second selection.
Susan Tedeschi swapped guitars in favor of her teal, autographed Fender Telecaster to trade solos with her husband during a cover of Junior Wells’ “Little by Little” before returning to their own catalog for “Last Night in the Rain”. Emmanuel Echem’s trumpet introduced a classic “Until You Remember”, a callback to TTB’s Grammy-winning debut album, 2011’s Revelator.
Gabe Dixon stamped a blissful solo onto the tail end of the song as Mike Mattison shuffled up front to belt out the night’s first Bob Dylan cover, “Down on the Flood”, a staple of Derek Trucks Band’s live repertoire. Isaac Eady‘s drums and Kebbi Williams’ saxophone collaborated to introduce “Let Me Get By” before Susan welcomed Mike Elizondo to the stage, swapping basses with Brandon Boone, to perform “Hero”. This marked the third time that TTB has performed this track off Future Soul so far this Beacon run. The band’s sixth studio album arrived at the stroke of midnight on Friday, March 20th.
Dixon, Mattison, and Tedeschi passed the vocal baton around, trading verses on the second Dylan cover of the show, “Tangled Up in Blue”. The next three songs would carry a weighty burden as Blind Faith’s “Had to Cry”, “Soul Sweet Song”, and Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying” followed in sequence.

After Gabe and Susan traded vocals on the Blind Faith cover, Kebbi’s flute soared into an emotional tribute to fallen family and friends. Illuminated heavenly on the backdrop, videos and pictures of Kofi Burbridge, Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Duane Allman, Sharon Jones, Dr. John, Col. Bruce Hampton, and others all smiled down from above. Gone but never forgotten. This would be the last TTB original of the night. After, Susan blazed into “Looking For Answers”, a cut from her 1997 sophomore solo album, Just Won’t Burn.
Winding down the set, guitarist Nels Cline joined in the action, dueling with Derek as Mike and Susan held down the vocal helm on the Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup”. This marked only TTB’s second-ever performance of the Exile On Main St. classic, after debuting it on night three of the residency last week. Mattison stayed at the forefront for a rowdy performance of Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” before ending the nearly two-hour set with Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery”, another classic from the days of D.T.B.

The 12 members of Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the stage one final time to encore Matthew Moore’s “Space Captain”. The song was famously covered by Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen troupe, whom TTB honored with Leon Russell during the 2015 LOCKN’ Festival.
Future Soul is out now, there are another five shows for Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Beacon Theatre, an album release party at Owl’s Tail this weekend, Mike Mattison and Trash Magic at Brooklyn Bowl on Tuesday, and Brandon Boone and Kebbi Williams at Bitter End on Thursday. Plenty of action ahead!
